CELAS Liberators and PDN Specialists dethroned defending champions CHM Travelers in basketball at the annual CEU Sportfest September 10, 2011 at the Centrodome.
The Liberators fought toe-to-toe against heavily favored and defending champions Travellers as early as the first canto of the championship match.
Renel Manalo of CELAS used his quickness in breaking into the tight defense of the Travelers, but his two early quick fouls stopped his team’s momentum.
R-Jay Ramirez picked up cudgel left by Manalo to keep the game within reach.
In the second quarter, long bomber Jarson Angeles of CHM took the game over by firing out two trifectas that kept the Liberators at bay.
To close out Ramirez, the Travelers put up bodies on him, making it difficult for the CE-LAS skywalker to score in half-court offensive plays.
CHM still controlled the third quarter by owning the boards courtesy of Marwin Santos.
The Liberators took advantage of missed shots from the outside by the Travelers by converting those turnovers into fastbreak points and high free throw shooting percentage in the fourth quarter.
CELAS since then never looked back as draftees and resident players played like a well-oiled machine orchestrated by point guard Miguel Manalaysay who would be the Most Valuable Player.
“It was an earned win talaga. It was a good game. Minsan kasi nasa character ng player na iyan, wala na sa strategy…” Mr. Banjo Serrano, coach of Travelers, said in an interview right after the game.
“Ang heart ng CELAS, talagang they wantedt to win…” Mr. Serrano added
“Ang instructions ko sa kanila, quick two lang. Kayang-kaya pa kasi marami pa sanang oras…” He continued.
CELAS won 92 – 85.
Meanwhile, PDN Lady Specialists convincingly won against College of Hospitality Management (CHM) Lady Travelers in their championship showdown.
The Specialists showed grim determination as early as the first quarter with their running game led by Naguit while Berdonado orchestrated the plays.
Zulueta, a streak shooter, finally connected from the three-point territory when the team needed it the most after poor showing in her first two games in the elimination round.
CHM had good looks and opportunities to score but they just couldn’t get it to go including their free throws
PDN capitalized on passing errors committed by CHM. Those unforced errors made in even more difficult for the Travelers to mount a rally.
Manansala, the 2011 MVP, started waxing hot to close the gap in the first half 16-20 in favor of the PDN.
Manansala, however, committed her third personal foul early in the second half with only three minutes gone by, which Berdonado took advantage of by eluding the defense thrown at her.
With only 1:23 left in the game, the Specialists leading by three 34-31, Garcia of CHM connected a hail Mary shot from the rainbow territory to tie the game at 34 all.
But Naguit had other things in mind and stole the ball only to increase break the tie from the free throw line after she was fouled.
Manansala, making her last attempt to retain the championship title, attacked the lane and got the foul that she wanted but failed to convert on her free throws.
Adding woes to their miseries, Fandinola fouled out in the ballgame that iced the game. PDN won 43-36 to get their first championship.
Meanwhile, the PDN emerged as the overall champion for this year’s Sportsfest.

Senior Mass Communication students settled for bronze at the Ad Summit held at Librada Avelino Auditorium – CEU Manila October 1, 2011.
Malolos represented five advertising entries: Adage II, Ads on Us, Eyedea, Multay Media Solutions, and Wavelength.
Adage II was named first runner up (Best Product Display); second runner up (Battle Cry Competition); Finalist (Top Ten Radio Advertisements); first runner-up (Best Creative Director for Print Media); first-runner up (Best Agency Brochure Award); Best Logo Design and Rationale; and Best Agency Letterhead Award.
Meanwhile, Ads on Us settled for second runner up (Con TodoPakulo); third runner up (Best Product Display); Best Packaging Award; finalist in Top Ten TV Commercials, Top Ten Print Advertisements, and Top Ten Radio Advertisements; and second runner up (Best Radio Advertisement Award).

Community Outreach Program, in partnership with the College of Hospitality Management, sponsored a mass baptism held at San Isidro Labrador Parish in Bulihan, Malolos City last October 15, 2011.
Guests, parents, friends, and some local government officials graced the culminating activity of students of Associate in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
“This event was made possible by the HRM students who want to extend their blessings to the children,” Ms. Vanessa de Guzman, host of the event said.
“Kami ay masayang-masaya dahil sa CEU,nabigayang-daan para mabinyagan ang aming mga anak. Kami ay lubos na nagpapasalamat,” Mrs. Josephine Jacildo shared, one of the parents of the children.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Raquel Diaz, former coordinator of Community Outreach Program in Malolos expressed her deepest gratitude to all who made the event possible.
“Ako ay nagpapasalamat sa lahat ng mga nakiisa at sumuporta sa aktibidad na ito,” Diaz shared.
Thirteen children and one adult were baptized.
Reception was later held at the ADA Hotel Function Room.

Sixty-five board examinees or 72.22% of CEU-Malolos passed the Nursing Licensure Examination held on July 2 and 3, 2011.
Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said that this passing rate is higher compared with the July 2011 national board passing rate of 48.01%.
Among the 78,135 Nursing examinees from the different universities and colleges in the Philippines who took the July 2011 licensure exam, 37,513 passed the examination.
In an interview by The Academe, Carmel Sofia Catacutan, one of the newly-registered nurses said that she was thankful for having been named as a registered nurse despite having trials in meeting the demands of the Nursing course.
“(I am) very proud that once again, CEU students made it in the NLE. Without the help of our clinical instructors, families and the almighty God, we could not have made this far,” she added.
As a tradition of the department for newly-licensed nurses, a testimonial luncheon was held last September 14.

As part of the celebration of Singkaban 2011 in honor of Our Lady of Victory, patron saint of Bulacan, Centro Escolar University Malolos through the College of Hospitality and Management joined the Kalutong Bulakenyo Cooking Competition held last September 12 at the Tanghalan ng Sining at Kultura and triumphed over ten (10) worthy opponents.
Out of 11 colleges and universities in Bulacan, the representatives of CEU-Malolos, Michelle Ann Kate Agustin, Marisol Jose, Mark Vincent Ramos, together with their coach, William Alcantara, brought home the bacon after winning the 1st place, receiving awards of Php 20, 000 cash prize, trophy and gift packs from Ajinomoto and San Miguel Foods Corporation.
The contestants contended in four categories involving the preparation of ham and the making of appetizer, main course, and dessert. Fortunately, CEU-Malolos representatives stood out and bested the others.
Other contestants, however, received consolation prizes from Governor Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado for showcasing their outstanding cooking skills.

Assessors from Philippine Quality Award Foundation, Inc. (PQA) conducted a site visit to CEU Manila, Makati, and Malolos campuses last October 24-26 for level III status.
Both teaching and non-teaching staffs from the three campuses merged to prepare for the site visit of the PQA team.
The PQA assessors were toured around the campus to see and assess the school buildings, facilities and equipment as part of the three-day site visit.
Selected students of different colle-ges, teaching and non-teaching personnel were engaged in a dialogue-interview regarding their respective concerns. Manila campus, the biggest of the three, hosted the PQA representatives for the first two days, while Malolos and Makati shared in the morning and afternoon visits, respectively.
As of press time, CEU is enjoying recognition for proficiency in quality managem`ent which is equivalent to Level II status.
Aside from CEU, University of Santo Tomas and John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation-Arevalo, Inc. in Iloilo City are among schools conferred by PQA.
The Accreditation Process
The PQA is considered to be the highest level of national award for organizational performance which is sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry.
Unlike the other accrediting organizations, PQA covers the business, health care, public and education sectors.
As a member of the education sector, CEU is expected to meet the requirements of the criteria categories: Leadership, Strategic Planning; Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management, Faculty and Staff Focus, Process Management; Organizational Performance and Results; and Student, Stakeholders and Market Focus.
When requirements are satisfactorily met, a communication will be sent to CEU to receive the said award.
Any institutions may reach Level IV status and be a recipient of Philippine Quality Award for Performance Excellence if the standards set by the PQA are met.
The “Edge”
In an interview by The Malolos Academe, Dr. Juliana Alvaro, Vice President for CEU-Malolos said that CEU will definitely enjoy a significant “edge” over other universities when awarded level III status..
We (CEU) have been known for quality education, services and management. If we get level III, we would be rewarded with significant increase in enrollment, a realization of one of our ultimate goals: making CEU a university of first choice,” she added.
Mrs. Elvira Borlongan, one of the members of the Student, Stakeholders and Market Focus committee explained how students and parents play a big role in this accreditation.
“Without the students and the parents (stakeholders of this university), our educational system will not work,” she stressed.

Centro Escolar University Malolos reached out to the victims affected by twin typhoons Pedring and Quiel.
Due to heavy rains and sudden release of water in dams, residents of Calumpit, Pulilan, Hagonoy, Paombong and Malolos suffered great damage and loss.
Most of the houses located in these places were submerged in floodwater. Others ascended the rooftops of their houses to escape the flood.
CEU extended the suspension of classes from October 3 to October 4 and offered to flood victims some areas in the campus like the Centrodome and ADA hotel for temporary shelter.
Relief goods and cash were distributed to the students and employees during suspension of classes and at the resumption.
At the height of the calamity, Dr. Juliana M. Alvaro, VP for Malolos, Dr. Elizabeth Roces, Dr. Ferdinand Magpayo, non-teaching staff, and officers of the USC personally delivered to Barangay San Marcos, Calumpit Bulacan repacked meals and relief goods.
Cash and relief goods were donated by students of Malolos and CEU Manila and Makati campuses led by President Dr. Cristina Padolina, in cooperation with the Community Outreach Program.
Meanwhile, a team of students and section coordinators of CEU Malolos donated the excess bags of relief goods to Barangay Frances and Corazon in Calumpit and Barangay San Agustin in Hagonoy, Bulacan a week after the resumption of classes.
Headed by Dr. Magpayo and Ms. Marife Cabuyao, the group, in coordination with faculty members who reside in the said towns and barangay coordinators, distributed some 400 bags of relief goods to the flood victims.
Though life in Calumpit and Hagonoy were back to normal as flood had already receded, many residents were still lacking everyday needs like regular grocery items which CEU provided for at least a couple of days.

CEU Malolos research team from the Department of Dentistry emerged as champion in the South East Asia Dentsply Competition at the 25th Annual Scientific Meeting of International Association for Dental Research (IADR) SEA Division held at Grand Copt Horne Waterfront Hotel, Singapore last October 28-30, 2011.
This was after the research team was adjudged grand champion at the Dentsply Competition Philippines at Astoria Plaza, Makati City on August 26, 2011.
Led by the team presenter Kime Cabalquinto, the group was composed of Sherwin Bernabe, Karissa Eileen Arceo, Khatrina Jane Yamat, Rachella Marie Robles Giselle Tolentino, Dr. Marcela Leoncio, adviser, and Dr. Shirley Wong, Dentistry Department Program Head.
“Overwhelming! Masaya ako kasi masaya lahat ng tao sa paligid ko. Sa CEU Malolos nanggaling ‘yung nanalo kaya napakasaya talaga namin.” Cabalquinto shared.
The victory automatically made Cabalquinto a member of the Student-Clinicians of the American Dental Association (SCADA) and gave the team the chance to present the winning piece at the annual meeting of the American Dental Association on October 2012.
Dr. Shirley Wong led the team in the research poster presentation on the second day of the competition.
“Everybody was crying… tears of joy.” Wong said. “This is probably the legacy I will leave to CEU Malolos and to the country. It’s already a history I guess. Kung para sa’yo, para sa’yo talaga. God is good,” she added.
Finishing 2nd was Malaysia, while Indonesia settled for 3rd.
Completing the delegations were Myanmar, Singapore, Hongkong, and Vietnam.
The historic win was a far better follow-up to their 3rd place finish (“Jackfruit Bark as Pit and Fissure Sealant”) in 2009 in Chang Mai, Thailand.
This year’s winning research entry is “Okra Mucilage as Dental Adhesive”.

Centro Escolar University Malolos campus has increased the enrollment by 8.9 percent in the first semester of school year 2011-12.
As of the record, 2,569 students have been officially enrolled for the first semester, as compared to 2,352 in SY 2010-2011.
According to Mrs. Amelia Valencia, Head of Student Records Management Department, the increase in number of enrollees is a good indicator that the school efforts to deliver quality education among students are being recognized in the region.
Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) holds the most number of students with 529 or 20.5% of the student population. Pharmacy Department ranked second with 397 or 15.45%, while 341 or 13.27% enrolled in Tourism Management.
Valencia added that the exodus to CEU of alumni children, the big demand in the (global) market, and the very good performance in the professional licensure examinations also affected the growth in number.
Meanwhile, the College of Management and Technology (CMT) and the College of Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences (CELAS) remain stable at 24.41 and 14.44 per cent, respectively.
Despite the decrease in the market demand, the Nursing Department still has 192 students or 7.47%.
Although the Dentistry Department has 112 students or 4.36%, its population is predicted to increase with the entry of 129 Pre-Dentistry students two years from now.
Mrs. Maricar Veranga, Program Head of the College of Hospitality Management, shared that they are looking forward to upgrading the services they offer to the students.

CMT has made it in the large workplace category award for “5s Model Work Area” for two years in a row while the Cash Division bagged the award in the small workplace category.
Different offices from the three campuses of CEU (Manila, Makati, Malolos) participated in the different categories.
Dr. Ma. Cristina D. Padolina, CEU President and Chief Academic Officer graced the awarding ceremony, together with other members of the Administrative Council.
"We are very proud to be recognized for the second time as 5s Model Work Area-Large Category. All the hard work of the faculty members and the staff really paid off. I strongly believe that it is through the concerted efforts of the team and for making 5s a way of life as the winning formula of the college," said Dr. Nilo V. Francisco, Dean of CMT.
The CEU Malolos delegation was composed of other finalists in the different categories together with the University Student Council.
The yearly Quality Awards aims to recognize the efforts of individuals and groups who perform their responsibilities with quality and excellence, also to appreciate the culture of continuous improvement towards attaining quality results.
